Modeling Global Change

Models are essential tools for enhancing scientific understanding, making predictions and projections, and ensuring informed decision making. USGCRP modeling activities integrate across diverse Earth system components including the atmosphere, oceans, ice sheets, land, hydrology, vegetation, biogeochemical cycles, and social and economic systems.

Modeling is an inherently integrative activity, synthesizing the understanding of the complex Earth system gained from scientific principles, experimentation, and measurement. Our modeling efforts bring together researchers from many different disciplines, and using models to support decision making brings scientists and stakeholders into close collaboration. As such, model development and application activities, for both research and decision support, are fundamental to fulfilling our mandate.
