USGS Finds Horsehoe Crabs in Decline

A new study co-authored by USGS scientists has used genomics to show that a distinct decline in horseshoe crab numbers hasoccurred that parallels climate change associated with the end of thelast Ice Age. The new research largely supported findings of recent significant declines in all areaswhere horseshoe crabs occur along the West Atlantic Coast from Maine toFlorida and the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and it the findings indicate that horseshoe crabs numbers maycontinue to decline in the future because of predicted climate change.
