Fifth National Climate Assessment Update: August 2021

Work on the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5) is underway. The Congressionally mandated report is the U.S. Government’s premier assessment of the science of climate change and its impacts on the Nation. It is written by hundreds of experts from around the country, who help ensure that the findings are accessible and useful to the widest possible audience. NCA5 is expected for release in late 2023.
NCA5 Director Announced
In July, USGCRP welcomed Allison Crimmins as Director of NCA5. Allison is a climate scientist with expertise in assessing health and economic damages associated with climate change. She brings nearly ten years of federal experience at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) leading and contributing to complex scientific assessments and communicating the impacts of climate change to diverse audiences. As Director of NCA5, Allison will oversee production of an authoritative report designed to help Americans understand and prepare for the impacts of climate change. She is detailed to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy from EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation.
NCA5 Chapter Leadership
USGCRP is pleased to announce the full chapter leadership slate for NCA5. In collaboration with the NCA5 Federal Steering Committee, Agency Chapter Leads and Coordinating Lead Authors identified an impressive group of experts to act as Chapter Leads for the duration of the assessment. Chapter Leads were primarily nominated through a public process, and are responsible for building diverse author teams and leading the development of chapter content.
Chapter Leadership Meeting
The first meeting of NCA5 chapter leadership was held August 3–4, 2021. The virtual meeting was an opportunity for NCA5 Agency Chapter Leads, Coordinating Lead Authors, and Chapter Leads to get to know one another and better understand their roles and responsibilities, meet USGCRP and NCA Technical Support Unit staff, and begin the process of building chapter author teams. A big thank you to all who made that meeting a success.

USGCRP is grateful to all of the members of chapter leadership for their hard work and dedication to the development of NCA5.
