Niwot Ridge Ameriflux Site, Colorado

Studies of soil carbon fluxes beneath the snowpack of the Niwot Ridge Ameriflux site have shown that recent declines in the snowpack of the western United States are likely to affect the flux of CO2 from the soil to the atmosphere. This research illustrates the tight coupling between the water and carbon biogeochemical cycles in mountain ecosystems. Credit: S. Burns, National Center for Atmospheric Research.
