Satellite observations can be used to provide frequent high-quality land-cover measurements in responding to rapid changes that occur during flooding and large-scale fires. This is graphically demonstrated by the comparison of two Landsat images showing areas of flooding in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. Credit: R. Beck, U.S. Geological Survey.
