Maya Buchanan serves as the Executive Secretary and Implementation Coordinator for the Subcommittee on Global Change Research (USGCRP Principals). In this capacity, she works with the Deputy Director to coordinate SGCR-related activities, including promoting stronger connections with other CENRS subcommittees as well as serving as liaison between the SGCR and Interagency Working Group (IWG) Co-Chairs, members, and coordinators. As Implementation Coordinator, she teams with the Implementation Lead to manage the implementation planning process.
Maya has spent five years serving federal and international governmental agencies to address climate, energy, and water problems, including NASA Earth Sciences, the Architect of the Capitol, the United Nations, and the World Conservation Union. As a Fulbright Fellow in Jordan and with UNESCO Iraq, she worked in the field to design and implement projects for responding to drought and the need for rural renewable power.
Maya received her M.S. in environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University and her dual B.A. in Environmental Science and Policy and Economics (honors) from Washington University in St. Louis. She has taken additional graduate coursework towards a second M.S. from Johns Hopkins University in Planetary and Earth Sciences. Maya is especially passionate about understanding the risk of extreme climate events and of interacting climate impacts for strategic resiliency building.
